Thematic connections between Roman comedy and Roman love elegy have long been observed. The variety of elements borrowed from comedy ranges from characters to situations, as well as direct quotations that Tibullus, Propertius, and Ovid deliberately incorporate into their poetry. As foreign elements in the new genre, these comedic citations undermine the meaning of the elegy: the constant reference to the alternative that Roman comedy offers with its happy endings for a nearly identical love story fundamentally calls into question the hopelessness of the elegiac situation. This work provides, for the first time, a systematic examination of the connections between Roman comedy and love elegy, supplemented by an extensive bibliography.
