This volume examines the relationship between pedagogy and culture in selected countries of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from various perspectives. The focus is on Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia. In relation to Herbartianism, German representatives were also included. The individual contributions repeatedly reveal overlaps, intellectual exchanges, and even unconventional commonalities between life reform, reform pedagogy, and Herbartianism. This is surprising, as until now, almost exclusively oppositions have been perceived, and ideological judgments have systematically obscured the view. Particularly in the fields of teacher education and childhood research, the cultural and life reform movements from the turn of the 20th century are reflected.
