Product details
Since the replacement of the colonial power France by England, the Francophone Canadian province of Bas-Canada has been striving for its cultural autonomy. In three case studies, the author examines significant moments in the search for literary independence, achieved through the creative appropriation of international writing styles. In the 19th century, Francophone Canada distanced itself—though never completely—from realistic and naturalistic stylistic tendencies. At the same time, alongside the roman de la terre, the urban novel emerged as an independent genre. After the Révolution tranquille, Littérature québécoise reached a stage of comprehensive autonomy: Anne Hébert's novel Les fous de Bassan showcases the independent development of modern narrative techniques, as exemplified by Faulkner in The Sound and the Fury.
