Product details

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is used for the genetic examination of embryos during artificial insemination, prior to implantation in the womb. In the biopolitical discourse, it is one of the key topics that legislators must address, alongside therapeutic cloning and stem cell research. Therefore, an ideological-free engagement with PGD is essential. This work aims to contribute to this discussion. The detailed examination of the current legal situation is primarily conducted from the perspective of couples affected by a potential ban, considering both statutory and constitutional law. The rights of parents are weighed against the protection of human dignity, any potential right to life of the embryo, and the legitimate interests of disabled individuals. Additionally, parallels to abortion and other prenatal diagnostic procedures are taken into account. Building on these considerations, the necessary cornerstones of a future legal regulation are presented.
