The German healthcare system is making a leap into the technology-supported future of health planning and provision with the electronic health card (eGK). Many processes still need to be integrated and prerequisites established: a nationwide uniform physician identification card, the blocking of invalid cards, preventing prescription fraud, reliably identifying patients in medical practices, and ensuring secure communication among service providers across sector boundaries. There are also unresolved disputes, such as the healthcare policy and economic reluctance of the medical profession, the complex implementation from a professional legal standpoint, as well as issues related to data security and privacy protection.
