The first written constitutions in Germany are still underestimated today. Particularly in contrast to the early constitutional southern German constitutions, this Rhenish constitutionalism from the years 1807-1811 has long been devalued as a Napoleon-dictated sham constitutionalism. The contributions in this anthology analyze the six individual state constitutions as well as the Rhenish Confederation Act. This not only rehabilitates Rhenish constitutionalism but also provides new material for a comparative perspective on the Rhenish reforms. This allows for a more precise positioning of the first German constitutions within the development towards a constitutional state in Germany.
