Product details
As a result of the October Revolution and the subsequent emigration of numerous Russian intellectuals, a significant production of children's literature developed in the countries of refuge during the 1920s and 1930s. Through extensive research in European and American archives, the studies highlight the contributions made by Russian emigrants in the field of children's books, despite the most challenging living conditions. In reconstructing theoretical discussions as well as literary themes of flight, growing up in a foreign land, memory, and identity, the author traces the tensions between languages and cultures, as well as the preservation of traditions and assimilation. In addition to surprising insights, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of Russia and Europe by systematically compiling forgotten literature.
