In contrast to the professional Saxon architects of the 18th and 19th centuries, the numerous rural master craftsmen receive little attention. Yet, it is precisely these craftsmen who played a crucial role in the continuation of the Protestant parish church until around 1860. The most significant among them is the master carpenter Christian Friedrich Uhlig from Altenhain near Chemnitz. Based on his plans, a total of 12 churches were built in the Ore Mountains and its foothills between 1820 and 1850. Conceptually, they follow the tradition of the baroque preaching church with surrounding galleries and pulpit altars; architecturally, they bridge the gap from Baroque to classicist elements and on to historicizing forms. This study focuses not only on the life and work of Christian Friedrich Uhlig but also on a detailed description of his sacred buildings and their architectural and church historical context. It aims to highlight the distinctive features of Uhlig's style and to bring his significant contribution to Saxon church construction in the 19th century back into public awareness.
