This work on black romanticism as a phenomenon of European literary and intellectual history brings together studies that discuss the overall movement using examples from both English and German literature. It provides insights into the significant dark dimension of romanticism, which has remained vibrantly alive in multimedia forms to this day. Black romanticism, along with its relativization of all narrowly defined forms of rationalism and empiricism, places the capacity for imagination at the center of thought and creation: it explores the realms of imagination and desire in the recesses of the self and embarks on a quest for a comprehensive image of humanity in a world that lies between what is no longer and what is not yet.
