This volume documents research findings from a conference of the Collaborative Research Center 600 "Strangeness and Poverty: Change in Forms of Inclusion and Exclusion from Antiquity to the Present" (SFB 600) at the University of Trier. Building on the discussion presented in Volume 5 of this series, the contributions address the question of the continuity of ruling or political orders in dealing with strangers and the poor since late antiquity. It examines the consequences of the Christian-motivated reinterpretation and reorganization of aid for the poor in European societies up to the late Middle Ages, the new forms of inclusion/exclusion of strangers and the poor associated with the rise of the modern state, and the patterns of solidarity that have emerged in the present and recent past in light of international migration, globalization, and Europeanization. Three studies are presented at the beginning, providing a cross-epochal perspective on the topic.
