The individual verses from the Liber AL, numbering 220, are of different natures: sometimes stirring, sometimes philosophical, practical or abstract, sometimes aggressive, sometimes meditative, poetic or direct. They come from the pen of the English occultist and poet Aleister Crowley, but not from his earthly consciousness: he heard the voice of Aiwass and wrote down what it spoke to him: mediumistic art. In their depth and complexity, these verses can best be compared to those of the Savitri, channeled by Crowley's contemporary Sri Aurobindo. Whether one views the three entities Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit—whose mouthpiece Aiwass is and which find expression in each chapter of the Liber Al vel Legis—as gods, higher structures of consciousness, or evolutionary principles of the cosmos is left to one's own interpretation, for they are all of these simultaneously. However, as a whole, the verses of the Liber Al represent a moral beacon through which we can navigate the—certainly also spiritual—shallows of our time. For what matters and what we should always measure ourselves against are our will for further development as well as our will to love more and more.
