On April 27, 1988, the 50th anniversary of Edmund Husserl's death, Hans Blumenberg noted: "The century that is now hastily coming to an end will be referred to in retrospect by historians of philosophy as the 'century' of phenomenology." This prediction also serves as a reference to his own philosophical legacy: a phenomenological anthropology, as developed by Blumenberg in a lifelong engagement with Husserl's philosophy. A highly productive phase of this engagement begins in the early 1980s, after Blumenberg has completed his major studies on metaphors and myths and starts to focus intensively on anthropological questions.
