This dialogue, belonging to Plato's middle works, has always exerted great fascination due to the particular existential situation it depicts. The last hours of Socrates before his execution portray the image of the philosopher; the man who is able to maintain the achieved unity with himself, with the reality of life, and with God even in the face of death. In the first part, Socrates is to defend his confidence in the face of death against a possible denial of immortality. The second part examines the premise of the concept of immortality and assesses its validity.
