There are adventurous notions circulating about the teaching methods and places of the philosophers of the late classical period. Despite the one-sided sources, the paths of Socrates in Athens, Plato's travels to Syracuse, and Aristotle's stays in Macedonia can be surprisingly well traced. Philosophers used specific shady circular paths to focus on a dialogue with one or two students while maintaining a steady movement. This behavior had already become a puzzle for historians of late antiquity, such as Diogenes Laertius. However, the phenomenon can still be explained and even topographically defined. The main focus is on the schools of the philosophers. In many cases, this referred to the Peripatos, a type of building that Plato created in the Academy. This book addresses what it looked like, what facilities were represented, and how long such teaching places existed.
