Philosophizing with children was already practiced in Germany after World War I, although there were educational controversies regarding its implementation. The educator and philosopher Hermann Nohl, who philosophized with children at the country school in Holzminden during the 1920s, wrote about the philosophical potentials of children: Slowly, the little person, who often thinks much more metaphysically than adults usually suspect, uncovers things such as the starry nature of the Earth, the fact that there is no up or down in space, the mystery of infinity, the wonder of life, the peculiar fact of law, the power of numbers, as well as questions like the problem of theodicy, which can occupy even four-year-olds for a long time, the moral question of freedom, and so on. This book clarifies the requirements placed on children's philosophizing.
