Product details

To protect the suburbs of Vienna and as a deterrent against the repeatedly invading rebellious Hungarians (Kuruc), the so-called Line Wall was constructed in 1704. The course of this second fortification ring around Vienna was aligned with the outermost suburban developments and also included part of the fields. In fact, the wall had to withstand an attack from the Kuruc only once as a military installation. Since neither a permanent, uninterrupted guard nor the maintenance costs of the structure were secured, the line was eventually transformed into a tax boundary. It served this function until its demolition at the end of the 19th century. The removal of the Line Wall ultimately allowed for the completion of the 'Belt' and the construction of the city railway line. The City Archaeology Vienna had several opportunities between 1989 and 2012 to document the course and structure of the Line Wall. This book presents these excavations, but also provides an overview of the construction history, subsequent projects, and the remaining remnants.
