Picasso in Contemporary Art

No artist of the 20th century receives as much public attention as Pablo Picasso. No one else’s works attract such focus on their form and expressive power, and no one else draws such large crowds to museums. Since 1912, with "Hommage à Picasso," the cubist portrait of Picasso by Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso's work has been a challenge and inspiration for numerous artists. For generations, works like "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907) or "Guernica" (1937) have been reinterpreted, leading to a wide variety of appropriations, regardless of the artistic approaches the artists have pursued themselves. It is the seemingly inexhaustible imaginative power and range in Picasso's work, which oscillates between abstraction and figuration, artistic creativity and politically intended statements, that inspires artists to continually create new interpretations.
