When the first part of Ceija Stojka's memories was published in 1988, the book and the charismatic presence of the author heralded a new era in the history of the Roma and Sinti, whose suffering could no longer be concealed behind a facade of artificial romance. Ceija Stojka was the first to step out of the shadows and simply told her story with great impact, contributing to the recognition of the Roma and Sinti as an Austrian ethnic group. Ceija Stojka's memories from the two books "We Live in Hiding" and "Travelers in This World" are now compiled here for the first time, recounting her childhood during the time of horse-drawn wagons, the persecution and survival in concentration camps, and the struggles to find a place in the post-war world, which again had no space for Roma and Sinti.
