Harald Fischer-Tiné highlights in his essay the limitations of the Eurocentric diffusion models that have long been prevalent in the history of science and demonstrates that scientific knowledge did not possess a topographically locatable center - not even in the seemingly clear-cut colonial 19th century dominated by the West. Specifically, he illustrates the practical potential of new historical perspectives from global history and new imperial history for enriching the history of knowledge through an example from the history of medicine: the genesis of Western colonial medicine in British India and the simultaneous transformation of local South Asian healing traditions. As Fischer-Tiné argues, in both cases, a pidgin knowledge characterized by borrowings and translations emerged, which eludes a clear geographical assignment.
