Product details

The Marquesans and Their Art: Studies on the Development of Primitive South Sea Ornamentation Based on Personal Travel Experiences and Museum Materials, Volume 2: Sculpture, with an Introduction on Material Culture and an Appendix of Ethnographic Additions by Karl von den Steinen. From August 1897 to February 1898, Karl von den Steinen traveled to the South Sea Islands of the Marquesas on behalf of the Berlin Ethnological Museum. In the years before and after his journey to the Marquesas Islands, Europeans collected artifacts and art objects to export them to all parts of the world. As a result, many cultural items, such as spears, statues, wood carvings, etc., ended up in museums as well as in private collections. Von den Steinen's three-volume work on the culture of the Marquesas includes numerous black-and-white illustrations alongside the spectacular and well-known tattoo art.
