Andrzej Szczypiorski (February 3, 1924 in Warsaw; May 16, 2000 there) was a Polish writer who gained significance not only through his literary work but also through his political engagement. Szczypiorski's oeuvre is rooted in his life journey: Growing up in a family shaped by the educated bourgeoisie, he witnessed the German occupation of his homeland at the age of 15. During this time, he studied at an underground university that his father Adam, a socialist historian and mathematician, co-organized. In 1944, Andrzej Szczypiorski participated in the Warsaw Uprising, was captured, and interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
