Eduard Lucas (1816-1882) was a significant German pomologist of the 19th century. In 1859/60, he founded a private educational institution for horticulture, fruit cultivation, and pomology in Reutlingen. Lucas served as the managing director of the German Pomologists' Association, which he established, and co-edited the Pomological Monthly with Oberdieck. He engaged in extensive writing in the field of fruit cultivation. He improved and expanded the Diel system developed by Adrian Diel for the categorization and identification of apple varieties, which is therefore also referred to as the Diel-Lucas system. Additionally, he developed a pomological system for pears and plums. In the present volume, he presents, among other topics, pomology and fruit cultivation, vegetable gardening, and pineapple cultivation in Silesia, as well as espalier and container fruit cultivation, viticulture, and flower cultivation.
