Dialog scenes are widely found in German narrative texts from around 1200. They may seem strange to modern readers in many respects. Nevertheless, they have rarely been discussed in depth in medieval studies so far. Based on a broad textual foundation, the author develops a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach in her work to investigate Middle High German forms of dialogue. This approach establishes and enables interpretative pathways that do not bypass the complexity and strangeness of medieval epic conversations, but rather bring them to the forefront. Thus, it opens up perspectives on the historicity, poetic nature, and literariness of Middle High German narrative literature, as well as on the anthropological-ontological dimensions of dialogue in general.
