In 1874, "Pole Poppenspäler" was published, one of the most well-known novellas by Theodor Storm, which has become a staple of school reading lists. In his novella, Storm pays literary tribute to the mechanic Geisselbrecht, who had also performed with his puppet theater in Husum. Skillfully embedded in a frame narrative, the story of the aging puppeteer Josef Tendier from Munich and his daughter Lisei is told. The difference between Northern and Southern Germany is cleverly reflected even in the language of the main characters. However, more significant is the conflict between artistry and petty-bourgeois society, between traveling people and respectable citizens, which Storm masterfully portrays, staying true to his principle: "If you want to write for the youth, you must not write for the youth.".
