Political speech as a structure of interaction: The Case of Hitler
German, 2001Product details
The subject of the empirical investigation is seven speeches by Hitler from the period between 1933 and 1944, including a first edition in the appendix. Political speech is understood as a communicatively constructed interplay between speaker and audience, whose dialogical structure is examined under the overarching concept of emphasis through interrelated, quantitative analyses of rhetoric - style, prosody, and semantics - and audience actions. Firstly, regular linguistic connections in spoken language are demonstrated, such as between attacking semantics and prosody or between syntactic and attacking semantics or prosody. Secondly, the interpretation references contemporary sources related to the historical-political contexts in which the speeches take place. The insights gained from linguistic interaction analysis reflect this.
