In most Western European democracies, right-wing populist parties have experienced a surge since the early 1990s. The study shows that Switzerland is no exception, and the local right-wing populist parties play a pioneering role in Western Europe. The issue of migration is a central focus of their political campaigns and initiatives. The strategy of right-wing populist parties is to portray migration as a societal conflict area and to link it with social problems such as unemployment, crime, and the welfare state crisis, in order to manifest a need for action regarding migrants. They provide interpretations of migration phenomena that refer to alleged cultural differences between migration groups and the local population, thereby contributing to the increase in tensions.
