Should we actively promote processes of democratization in other parts of the world? With the end of the Cold War, it seemed that liberal democracy was gaining ground worldwide. Established democracies attempted to support this process. However, since the beginning of the new millennium, resistance has emerged, and accusations of imperialism have increased. In her original book, Dorothea Gädeke formulates normative foundations and limits for external democracy promotion for the first time. She develops a critical republican theory of justice and demonstrates why the practice of external democracy promotion constitutes a politics of domination and how it can be overcome.
