Austromarxism - the Austrian school of Marxism in the first half of the 19th century - is inseparably linked to the names of Otto Bauer, Max Adler, and Rudolf Hilferding. Otto Bauer officially propagated Austromarxism from 1918 to 1934. During this time, he served as the deputy party chairman of the Social Democratic Workers' Party. His succinct call: "Not to smash heads, but to win heads!" reflects the strategy of the Austromarxists. The Workers' Party is to come to power through the force of persuasion and democratic means. Only when a new socialist consciousness has been created does the time come for the social revolution. As a social theory, Austromarxism seeks a third way between orthodox Marxism and the radical left on one side and revisionism on the other.
