In this book, John Rawls presents the contractarian view of justice as fairness developed in "A Theory of Justice" within the broader context of a general theory of political legitimacy and justice. This leads to a number of expansions and corrections compared to the original conception, particularly concerning the stability of justice in a well-ordered society. The starting point of political liberalism is the unrestricted acknowledgment of the possibility and reality of reasonable pluralism. Rawls demonstrates the justifiability of a political conception of justice in a society whose members hold various and sometimes opposing religious and moral values and life perspectives.
