A terrorist act is not only an act of destruction but also a specific form of communication known as 'propaganda of the deed.' To remain relevant within a specific public sphere, terrorist groups must also utilize other, non-destructive modes of communication. Both in the present and in the past, magazines and periodicals have been used by terrorist organizations to disseminate messages and explain their actions. This paper focuses on two such products: The magazine Zusammen Kämpfen was published and distributed in the 1980s by the environment of the Red Army Faction. The magazine Inspire was published from 2010 to 2017 and was produced by the Arab branch of Al-Qaeda, Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula. The comparison of these media, which differ greatly in form, content, and conception, reveals the targeted journalistic communication strategies aimed at specific audiences, as well as the need of social-revolutionary or jihadist terrorist groups to have a more controllable - their own - communication channel alongside the mass media images of attacks.
