Police and violence are a constant topic in the media: stones thrown during demonstrations, beating police officers, deadly attacks on officials, assaults in police custody, suicides of officers following alleged bullying or sexual assaults - the list of possible themes is long and is continually updated by the media. This volume presents the scientific contributions from the XIV. Conference of the Working Group on Empirical Police Research, which took place in 2011 at the Police Academy of Lower Saxony in Hann. Münden. This conference was one of the first in Germany to explicitly bring together the perspectives of violence against police officers and violence by police officers. The aim of this volume is to shift the debate away from its fixation on legal versus illegal violence and to analytically emphasize the interaction perspective between citizens and the police.
