The question of whether there is only foreignness in speech or whether there is a foreignness of speech itself is at the center of the final volume of this study. Building on recent research into orality and literacy as well as the temporality of speech, it is shown that language slips away from itself, that living speech, in its physicality and technical mediation, is never entirely present. The foreignness arises from a primordial distance in proximity. This fundamental idea is varied across different areas. The engagement with Gadamer's "Hermeneutics" culminates in an incomprehensibility within comprehensibility that breaks the circle of meaning and understanding. In contrast to the social science distinction between cultural incomprehensibility and social non-belonging, as it operates in various ways in the works of Schütz, Luhmann, and Habermas, the text explores this theme further.
