The Vijnanabhairava presents us with a classic tantric text of non-dualistic Kashmir Shaivism. The goddess, Shakti, who is aware of the highest secrets, asks her husband, Shiva, to explain the mystery of his essence in a way that she can convey it to people in a language they understand. From the ensuing dialogue between Shiva and Shakti arises a series of meditation instructions that help attain divine consciousness. Shakti, who is inseparably connected to Shiva, seemingly enters into a duality with Shiva, and after completing her work, she reunites with him in bliss.
