The philosophy of religion of Kashmir Shaivism answers the great questions about the nature of creation. Ksemaraja (10th century CE) expresses this teaching in poetic words: "A spark of the divine fire descends into matter and forgets its divine origin. Like an exile, it wanders through distant lands and various forms. In humans, it attains the gift of language and thought. Yet a time comes when it is filled with homesickness, and now its journey home begins. It does not have to go very far. It only needs to cast off the mask of the pseudo-self and enter into its essential true self, which is Spanda, the heartbeat of Shiva, and it will become what it already was. This is an experience for which there are no words in human language." Jaideva Singh translated the writings of Ksemaraja from Sanskrit into English.
