Promoting pop music? Until a few years ago, it was hardly conceivable that the promotion of pop music would find its way into the entrenched cultural policy funding practices. However, there are now a few countries, regions, and municipalities in Germany that have recognized the interdisciplinary relevance of pop music as well as its cultural, social, and economic contexts. The whole truth is that pop music still receives too little cultural policy support. This raises the question: Why promote pop music? What cultural policy attention does pop music receive? How can the cultural significance of pop music be acknowledged through funding? Using the state of Rhineland-Palatinate as an example, David Maier delves into all these questions.
