Please note that this title mainly consists of content that is freely available on the internet. Anti-knock agents, also known as octane boosters, are additives to gasoline that reduce the knocking tendency of the gasoline engine by increasing the octane rating. They are used to prevent uncontrolled auto-ignition (knocking) of gasoline in the cylinder. The knock resistance is measured by the octane rating (RON = Research Octane Number). Uncontrolled combustion of the fuel-air mixture occurs because, during compression in the cylinder, temperatures are generated that are high enough to break the molecules into radicals before the spark plug initiates a controlled ignition. This primarily happens with n-alkanes, whose carbon atoms are arranged in a chain-like structure.
