Their conflicts, frictions, and energy seemed symptomatic of the young generation that set out in the 1960s to realize their ideals. Since hardly anyone had a phone back then, letters were exchanged between Rostock, Hoyerswerda, and Hamburg: encouragements, confessions, "women's stuff." She had fierce political arguments, especially with Lutz, who had fled to the West. At the end of her life, when she ironically saw herself as the "black sheep" of the family - childless, suffering from cancer, with her novel unfinished - it was her siblings who encouraged her. Now, the letters from the brothers and sisters come together to form a German-German family novel, centered around an extraordinary writer.
