In the nine chapters of this volume, the classic core areas of pragmatics are presented and discussed, namely deixis, implicature, presupposition, speech acts, and conversational structure. On the other hand, areas such as sentence type and mood, indirectness, information structure, as well as language acquisition and pragmatics are addressed, which account for the expansion of the pragmatic spectrum. Two additional chapters, one on the relationship between grammar and pragmatics and the other on the relationship between grammar and cognition, reflect the position of pragmatics within linguistics. This introduction clearly and vividly explains relevant basic concepts and theoretical questions, analyzes linguistic data exemplarily, and outlines possible developments in pragmatics. Targeted literature references, exercises, and a glossary serve the purpose of self-study.
