The life and work of Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) were closely linked to France. From a young age, he became familiar with the French language and explored France's landscapes, everyday culture, literature, and art through reading and traveling. All these ideological and personal influences enriched his own literary and garden artistic creations, which were received with interest in France. However, the prince's Francophilia also had its fractures. As a young man, he fought in the Russian-Prussian service against the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte during the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14, and even at the age of nearly 85, he volunteered for military service again after the outbreak of the Franco-German War in 1870. This volume presents the wealth of Pückler's references to France for the first time in context.
