Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) was not only a garden artist and writer but also a frequent traveler. Of particular significance is his journey to the Orient, which took him from 1834 to 1840 to places such as Algeria, Tunisia, Greece, Egypt, Syria, and the region of present-day Turkey. The Orient—both as a political constellation and as an imaginary construct—was a central pillar of Pückler's life and thought. He was among the writers and bon vivants of the 19th century who indulged their imaginations in the Orient and subsequently created small oriental islands in Europe. The park and castle of Branitz still bear witness to personal memories, fantasy, and a longing for distant places. This volume brings together the contributions from an international conference that took place in 2018 in Muskau and Branitz. It includes contributions from Daniel Bertsch, James Peter Bowman, Christian Friedrich, Susann Harder, Dino Heicker, Wolf-Dieter Heilmeyer, Silke Kreibich, Marie-Ange Maillet, Andrea Micke-Serin, Simone Neuhäuser, Andrea Polaschegg, Ulrike Stamm, and Kerstin Volker-Saad.
