1. Story: The Welf prince Heinrich and the Staufen princess Agnes overcome all odds to assert their love for each other, thereby bringing an end to the years-long feud between the Welfs and the Staufens. The excommunication of Heinrich the Lion is lifted by the emperor. 2. Story: The rulers of Lübeck, led by the reigning mayor, live in luxury despite the looming decline of the Hanseatic League. The simple yet highly dedicated young merchant Wullenwever is called upon by the citizens to help restore Lübeck and the Hanse to new power against Danish resistance. However, after only two years as mayor of Lübeck, he falls victim to the intrigues of the patricians and former rulers, is tortured, and ultimately executed. Both stories are based on true events.
