The first book of Titus Livius vividly presents many prodigies in short stories. This particular character stands in stark contrast to the later, catalog-like listings of prodigies and forms the basis for the present motif-historical and narratological study, which has not been conducted in this way before. The intense focus on the representation of the prodigies as well as their embedding in the context of Roman royal history shows Titus Livius no longer merely as a strict restorer of ancient Roman religion. Rather, the author creates an image of Livius who sometimes reveals himself as a skeptic, subtly and intelligently incorporating his doubts into his first book.
