Sebastian Egenhofer's "Production Aesthetics" does not deal with the material creation of works. The concept of production he develops is more fundamental: it takes into account Marx's dictum that production cannot be made visible or represented - because what is produced in production is the very element of representation itself. Egenhofer elucidates the structure of the rift that separates every representation from its becoming. The artwork is embedded in this rift. With its aspect of visibility, its aesthetic or image-like presence, it conceals it. In this presence, production is constitutively forgotten. However, it is part of the structure of the artwork to touch upon and turn over the edge of this forgetting. At the center of detailed analyses of works is the modern break with the representational image and the transcendence of the image form.
