In ten aphoristic-narrative texts, Giorgio Agamben once again explores the realm of the human: in its relationship to memory and play, to religion, to the longing for the unrememberable, for what we perceive as our "genius," our authorship, our self, which can only be grasped in the form of the unheard, the always fleeting, and only - perhaps - as an image, as an imagination on the "Day of Judgment." The sacred self and its assistant, psychology, are secretly dethroned, and new paths open up for thought (and life) where individual distinctiveness is preserved but deeply connected to something inexplicable or magical or impersonal, pre-individual. The "specific" being, being as appearance, and the being recognizable in appearance, is ultimately also the being of the species, the face of humanity.
