In the context of this paper, six types of professional self-conceptions of debt counselors are reconstructed based on 20 qualitative interviews, which primarily refer to the concrete design of the counseling situation. Essential to this are differences regarding the categories: counseling orientation, emotional attitude, and positioning between debtor and creditor. These central categories correspond with individual factors of the counseling persons as well as the structural framework conditions of the respective organization in which the counselors work, which, however, played only a subordinate role in the formation of the types.
