Progression anxiety - the fear of the disease progressing with all its negative consequences - is one of the greatest burdens for chronically ill patients. As a healing force, it can lead us to good self-care. When it spirals out of control, it not only significantly reduces the patients' quality of life but also prevents appropriate therapy. Therefore, progression anxiety must be specifically addressed. In practice, however, fears about the future are often not discussed. Patients and therapists alike try to ignore the fears or force hope and action through positive thinking - usually without success. This manual presents a well-founded and practice-tested alternative: patients are encouraged to actively engage with their fears and to plan concrete countermeasures and preventive actions.
