On May 18, 1851, Ida Pfeiffer left Vienna for London. This marked the beginning of her second world tour, which would last more than four years. During this journey, the 53-year-old Viennese woman was guided by her explorer's fever. From Singapore, she explored the island world of Dutch India, now known as Indonesia. In Borneo, she achieved a remarkable feat: she became the first white person to traverse the interior of the island along a route that many later explorers would follow.
