Product details

The affiliation of Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" with autofiction is questionable, but its glorification as a foundational text of autofiction writing is not. Numerous authors elevate Marcel Proust to the status of a pioneer, a literary role model, and even a patron saint of this controversially discussed genre. The present study examines the reception of Proust through the lens of three eminent representatives of autofiction in France, Spain, and Italy. The Proustian reminiscences range from an ambivalent appropriation of memory and death metaphors in Doubrovsky's postmodern autofiction, to the fantastical rewriting of Combray and "Time Regained" by Carmen Martín Gaite, and finally to the ironic reworking of the Albertine figure and Proustian epiphany in Walter Siti's hyperrealist autofiction.
