The book presents for the first time the contribution of the province of Brandenburg and the imperial metropolis of Berlin to the development of monument protection and restoration as a state task in the German Empire. Based on extensive archival sources and the evaluation of original building findings, a comprehensive presentation of the most important monument preservation cases is provided, broken down by government districts. It includes numerous architectural monuments, ranging from medieval town, village, and monastery churches to city walls and gates, municipal buildings, baroque palaces, and decorative squares, as well as restorations of the still young creations of Schinkel and his school. The approach of those responsible for the monuments is also assessed in light of the emerging monument theories of the time: the relevance of the new research findings is evident through striking parallels to today's monument controversies.
