The emergence of consciousness and subjectivity cannot be thought of independently from societal power structures. For, as Judith Butler states, becoming a subject also means submitting to these structures. Identity, including gender identity, is based on one's positioning within the field of societal implications. Butler examines this paradoxical relationship between the social and the psychological by bringing the consciousness theories of Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud, Althusser, and especially Foucault into a dialogue that has so far been avoided by their proponents.
